A Day in My Shoes {Linky Party}

I've been meaning to link up to this fun linky party for a week now, every time I read someone elses "Day in my shoes" I keep it "unread" as a reminder to link up. (I often read blogs on my phone via Google Reader, which makes it hard to link up)

A Typical Day in Mrs. Glover's Life

4:00  

The alarm goes off, hit snooze as many times as necessary

4:30ish  

Succumb to the alarm and get up, shower, get ready, let the dog out

5:45  

Grab final things for school and get in the car (I drive about 30-45 minutes to work depending on weather and traffic)

6:15-6:30  

Arrive at school, unpack, check emails, blogs, and other fun things

7:15 

Staff Devotions (this is the scheduled time, they usually don't start until closer to 7:30)

7:50  

This is the earliest students can come into classrooms, if they are in the building before this, they must go to daycare.

8:00

Ring the bell for the start of school, go through my mail in my office 

(during this time my assistant teaches spelling)

Back in the classroom for History...my students love when I sing my get ready for history song to them

Depending on the day of the week I also have band, art, Pastor's class, or computer thrown in somewhere.  (okay, it's about 9 AM on Mon, Tue, Wed, Thurs).

Every other Friday we have specials.  During those days I teach Health all day to every grade, K-8...oh joy!

Happy New Year {Linky Party}

Wow! What a slacker I have been with this blog. A lot has happened since Thanksgiving in my life, both personally and professionally--more on that later.

Today I'm linking up with Secondary Solutions, a blog dedicated to all things middle school, high school, and Language Arts!  A special thanks to Kristen who told me about this linky party!  I'm super excited!  More and more I am finding that there are middle school/upper grades bloggers out there and we can represent. :)

Whatever Wednesday--on Thursday

As I laid down in bed last night I realized I hadn't blogged about Whatever yet. I wasn't about to get up and go turn on the computer to do it, so I decided to compose it in my head last night and put it on the blog this morning. :)

This is what my house looks like right now...

We're in the process of packing our house up because the new owners close next Wednesday and we give up possession on October 1st.  It's kind of a nightmare.

It feels like my desk looks like this...

Though my computer is a bit newer than the one in the picture.  I do make it a goal to clear off my desk every night before I go home, but that often means I move piles from my desk to the shelf behind my desk...  A bit counter productive. 

My classroom is a crafty, learning, goodness mess too.  My kids are making a Civil War diorama so we've got supplies for that all over the place.  The are also working on projects for the craft fair next month.  There are paper punched butterflies everywhere.  When we're done with both projects I'll post a picture.  :)

Now it's off to finishing up my Shurley English lesson for the day.  I'll post my Thriving Thursday this afternoon.  And tomorrow is FRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDAY!  Hooray! 

Teaching Tuesday {Linky Party}

Teaching Tuesday: What's your favorite lesson you teach or have taught?

I love all things History and Language Arts. My favorite lessons are definitely in those two areas. My first year of teaching I taught the Civil War. My students were really into it. I remember constructing dioramas of Civil War battles. My students did TONS of research on some of the major battles and then built their dioramas.

That same year in science we studied simple machines. Over Christmas break I assigned my students to create mousetrap cars. They brought them back in January and we raced them.

We use Shurley English (since last year) and one of my favorite things to do with my students is have language races. I give them a sheet with 10 sentences to classify. They all start with the sheet upside down on their desk and one student is at the Smart Board. When I say go they take off and start classifying. They then come to me where I am in the room. I collect their papers and quickly check them as they come up to me. Sometimes I give prizes (pieces of licorice or Tootsie Pops) to the first person to get everything correct. The first person is always the next to go to the Smart Board. The very first time I did it one boy won two times in a row. He asked if he could forgo his prize and turn to let someone else win/go. Now my students who have won once will always ask permission to forgo their win/turn in order to let someone else in the class have a chance.

Memory Monday {Linky Party]

Memory Monday:  What are your memories from middle school?

I have a few memories from being in fifth and sixth grade to share. 

Fifth Grade:  This is the first year I remember being allowed to use a pen to write our homework.  We were awarded "Pen"manship Awards which allowed us to complete assignments in blue or black pen.  Once we were given the award our teacher posted it on a bulletin board.  We could lose our privilege to write in pen at any time.  I also remember learning about the federal deficit in fifth grade.  I think the lesson had something to do with place value.  I also remember predicting what the debt would be when we graduated (in 2000).  Though I have no idea what it was when we graduated, or what our prediction as a class was...

Sixth Grade:  This is the year I first read The Egypt Game.  It's also the year my most embarrassing moment in school...I'm afraid to share, so I won't.  In Science in sixth grade we studied rainforests.  I remember building our own rainforest at the end of the hallway.  We constructed trees out of cardboard and paper.  We drew large animals to put in our rainforest.  I wish I had a picture.  It was in sixth grade that we took a field trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. 

What to Write?

Do you ever wonder what to write about?  In the car on the way to school this morning I was trying to brainstorm some topics to share on my blog.  I want to share things with my readers that might help them, but at the same time I want to share day to day stuff as well.  So I've decided to have another linky party.

I'm a Survivor...{Linky Party}

Mrs. Ayala at Kinder FuN is hosting a Linky Party for the first day of school!  I know I'm not a teacher of the wee-ones, but the questions were pretty non-grade specific.  And since my first day of school was today, I thought I would link up to it.  You can link up to it too!  Click the "I'm a Survivor!" logo below my answers & link up to your first day of school.

1.  What did you wear on the 1st Day of School?
       This took forever to decide.  Finally I made the decision.  White skirt, white lacy cami, and pink cardigan like thing.  I tried to take a picture of myself.  I'm sitting at my desk. 

2.  What did you have to have to survive that day?
      We only had a half day, but by 10 AM I was starving and ready for lunch!  I had to crack open a Dr. Pepper 10.  We were good to go.

3.  What is the funniest or unexpected thing that happened to you on the 1st Day of School?
       Unexpected:  I have only 5 students in my classroom instead of the perceived 7.  :-S  BUT, I did get a call that we are getting a new student tomorrow that we weren't planning on.  Time to keep praying that God can bring us some more kiddies...
